Warruya Officially Opens, Delivering 27 New Homes for Local People

Housing Trust marked the official opening of Warruya in central Wollongong, celebrating the delivery of 27 new social and affordable homes for the Illawarra community.

Located in the heart of Wollongong, Warruya has delivered 27 high-quality one, two and three-bedroom apartments, including a mix of social and affordable rental housing. In line with funding agreements, these homes are dedicated for key workers and female-led households, supporting those most impacted by housing stress. Positioned close to the CBD, public transport, schools, TAFE, the University of Wollongong and the hospital precinct, Warruya connects residents to jobs, services and everyday opportunities.

The opening brought together partners from across all levels of government, including Housing Australia, Homes NSW and Wollongong City Council, whose funding and support helped make Warruya possible. Consultants, contractors and project teams also came together to recognise the shared effort behind the project and what can be achieved through strong collaboration and a shared purpose.

Housing Trust CEO Amanda Winks described the completion of Warruya as a proud moment for everyone involved.
“We are incredibly proud to see these homes complete and ready for people to move in. Bringing Warruya from early planning through to delivery has taken the care, commitment and contribution of many people. Reaching this milestone reflects that shared effort.”

She also acknowledged the many partners who contributed to bringing Warruya to life.
“Housing Trust is grateful to our funding partners across all three levels of government, as well as our consultants, contractors and trades, who worked with us to make this possible. Importantly, our tenants also played a role, with their feedback helping shape key elements of the design.”

Reflecting on the impact of the project, Amanda said Warruya shows what can be achieved when people work together with purpose.
“Through strong partnerships and shared investment, we have delivered well-designed homes in a location that connects people to services, opportunity and community.”

The Illawarra continues to experience significant housing pressure, with more than 3,200 households waiting for social housing and around 5% of local households estimated to need affordable housing. Developments like Warruya play an important role in responding to this need, providing safe, secure homes and a foundation for people to move forward with confidence.

The name “Warruya”, from the Dharawal language meaning “Aunty”, honours the important role of female Elders and Aunties in caring for Country and sharing knowledge. It also recognises generations of health workers who have supported the community at the nearby Wollongong Hospital.

The day began with a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony, grounding the opening in respect and connection. From there, guests gathered to mark the completion of a place that will soon become home for many.

For more than 40 years, Housing Trust has been providing safe, secure and affordable rental housing across the Illawarra. Warruya reflects that ongoing commitment, delivered through partnership and designed to support people to feel connected, secure and at home.
