Housing Trust Awards Nearly $250K in Scholarships to Empower Community Housing Tenants

For almost a decade, Housing Trust has been helping to change lives through the Tylah West Education Scholarships and this year was no exception.

At a heartfelt event attended by the entire Housing Trust team, 42 scholarship recipients were recognised and celebrated. From primary and high school students, university graduates to young people launching their careers and others rejoining the workforce,  each story reflected the power of opportunity.

In total, the program has now awarded close to $250,000 in financial support to Housing Trust tenants, helping them take the next step in their education or employment journey.

The scholarships were created in memory of Tylah West, who was part of Housing Trust’s Aboriginal traineeship program before her passing in 2015. With the ongoing support of Tylah’s family, the program has become a lasting legacy.

CEO Amanda Winks said today’s event is a standout on the Housing Trust calendar, and a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when people are given the tools they need to thrive.

“The great thing about the program in my view, is its flexibility – it’s open to any age and for anything recipients need to support their education or employment goals. From IT to course fees or even school shoes, in the current cost of living crisis sometimes it’s the little things that make all the difference.”

“Along with program sponsors CBA and GM3 we’re grateful to be able to support opportunities for learning and growth through the scholarship today.”

Funds for the scholarships are raised through Housing Trust’s annual Golf Day, which returns this November to support both the Tylah West and Housing Trust UOW Opportunity Scholarships.
