Housing Trust recently welcomed NSW Minister for Housing Rose Jackson and Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Paul Scully to Warruya, our newest social and affordable housing development in Wollongong.
The visit was an opportunity to see firsthand how strong partnerships are helping bring much-needed homes to life. Supported by Housing Australia, Homes NSW and Wollongong City Council, Warruya reflects what’s possible when all levels of government work together with community housing providers to respond to local need.
Set beneath the protective gaze of Geera (Mount Keira), Warruya is nearing completion and will provide 27 thoughtfully designed homes for single people, families and key workers. The development will offer a mix of social and affordable housing, creating a place where people can feel safe, build stability and stay connected to community, work and essential services.
The name Warruya comes from the local Dharawal language, meaning “Aunty”, a term of deep respect. It acknowledges the site’s connection to Country and honours the many carers, healers and health professionals who have lived and worked in the surrounding health precinct.
More than bricks and mortar, Warruya is about creating opportunity, a place where people can put down roots, feel a sense of belonging and build the life they choose.
Housing Trust is committed to partnering to deliver more homes like these across the Illawarra, now and into the future.
