Sonia's Story
Sonia was born and raised on Dharawal Land. She is a strong and resilient Aboriginal woman working to trace her ancestral roots. Her mum was a Wiradjuri Woman and her dad a Kamilaroi Man.
‘’I grew up in social housing here in the Illawarra, the youngest of seven. Mum did everything she could to make our life good but the intergenerational trauma faced by my parents made life an uphill battle.”
Sonia faced racism throughout life and school years and left in year 11. She worked at Bi-Lo /Coles for 21 years and raised her daughter alone. ‘’As my daughter gained her independence, I knew I was ready for bigger challenges. I am currently working through my Certificate 4 in Community Services where I know I will be able to do the most good.”
Sonia has a traineeship with Housing Trust. Struggling to pay rent every week, she knows the value of a safe and secure roof over her head and puts that as a priority. “I love my study, but work hard to ensure the rent is paid. Without that, there is no basis for everything else.”
Sonia has an inner strength that was recognised by her teachers and peers and has been nominated for the Vocational Education and Training State Awards for Aboriginal Student of the Year. Her next steps will be joining la w enforcement with a focus on Family and Domestic Violence and Child Protection.
“I didn’t have the easiest start in life, but I will not be identified as a victim. I have worked hard to get through all the obstacles, and I will do more than survive, I will thrive.”
